Burgundy wine route

Spanning from the Chablis area to the Mâconnais region, and encompassing the vineyards of Auxerre, the Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, and Côte Chalonnaise, the Burgundy wine region presents an enchanting landscape. The distinct vineyards in this area, known as Climats, earned a well-deserved place on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2015.

Immerse yourself in the charm of historic villages of—Pommard, Gevrey-Chambertin, Puligny-Montrachet, Saint-Véran, Pouilly-Fuissé, and more—whether you choose to explore on foot, by bike, or even horseback. Along the way, indulge in the region's rich culture and sample some of its hundreds of wines, which have secured Burgundy's reputation for a refined lifestyle.

Burgundy's vineyards, perfectly suited for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, offer an extraordinary variety of wines that have achieved worldwide acclaim, both for their quality and diversity.

Leisure Activities

Tennis, horse riding, cycling, walking, hiking, fishing, are all activities you can enjoy not far from here. We have our own full size petanque course where you can practice your skills in this typically French game with a glass of pastis.

Cultural Sites

If you're exploring Burgundy, don’t miss the charming and peaceful town of Louhans about 15 km from us, where tradition and authenticity come together beautifully. Louhans is renowned for its 157 arcades, which line the Grande Rue and stretch over 500 meters, making it one of the most extensive arcaded streets in France. These arcades date back to the 13th century, with their origins tied to the medieval period when the town was fortified. The arcades were initially built to support commercial activity, providing shelter for merchants and shoppers. Over time, Louhans became a bustling hub for trade, particularly known for its markets, including the famous Monday market that continues to this day.

Another suggestion is Chalon-sur-Saône, situated between Dijon and Mâcon, perfect for a leisurely stroll around its historic center and a visit to the stunning cathedral.

For history and architecture enthusiasts, the Château de Pierre-de-Bresse is a must-see. This remarkable Renaissance-style castle, set within expansive formal gardens, is located just 13 kilometers from here and makes a wonderful day trip.

Tournus is another delightful stop, boasting an intriguing old town featuring an abbey and several fascinating historical buildings. Not far from Tournus, the Château de Cormatin is a true gem, with its richly decorated interiors and meticulously maintained French gardens that create a captivating setting.

While traveling between Tournus and Cormatin, I recommend taking time to visit the quaint village of Brancion, which has undergone significant renovations in recent years, making it a delightful spot to explore. Nearby, the picturesque villages of Chapaize and Uchizy also offer a tranquil charm worth experiencing.

No trip to southern Burgundy would be complete without a visit to Cluny. Famous for its renowned monastery, this site is among the most visited religious landmarks in France and played a pivotal role as one of the most influential monastic settlements in medieval Europe. The village of Cluny itself is equally delightful and rich in history.

Mâcon, located southeast of Cluny, offers a scenic riverside walk that’s ideal for unwinding. Between Cluny and Mâcon, the quaint village of Berzé-le-Châtel is well worth a visit, with its impressive medieval fortress overlooking the area. The terraced gardens at the château also provide breathtaking views of the surroundings.

Nearby, the village of Solutré-Pouilly stands out for its stunning vineyards and is dominated by the iconic Rock of Solutré, a prehistoric site and one of France's “grand sites” of natural and historical significance.

One of my favorite places in the region is the Arboretum de Pézanin in Dompierre-les-Ormes. This expansive arboretum features a serene lake, diverse tree and plant species, and the European Gallery of Forests and Woodlands, which highlights the essential role of forests in our ecosystems.

West of Mâcon, the Château de Drée is a splendid example of 18th-century classical architecture. Its gardens are officially designated as a “remarkable garden” in France, making it a perfect destination for lovers of elegance and history.

Heading toward the southwest of Saône-et-Loire, the 12th-century Basilica of Paray-le-Monial is a stunning pilgrimage site that draws over a million visitors annually. This basilica also provides insight into the grandeur of the abbey at Cluny during its prime.

Lastly, a short trip from Paray-le-Monial takes you to the priory church at Anzy-le-Duc. This beautiful example of 12th-century Romanesque architecture is adorned with captivating medieval frescoes that are sure to leave a lasting impression.

Natural Beauty

Lake Vouglans - A stunning lake offering water activities such as swimming, kayaking, and pedal boating, perfect for relaxation.

Hérisson Waterfalls - A series of beautiful waterfalls in an enchanting setting, great for hiking.

Tufs Waterfall - A unique cascade surrounded by lush greenery, offering a breathtaking spectacle.

Castles of the Region

Château Pierre de Bresse - A 17th-century castle that now houses the Écomusée de la Bresse Bourguignonne, showcasing the history, culture, and traditions of the Bresse region.

Château Rully - A 12th-century medieval fortress, still owned by the same family, offering guided tours and wine tastings in its historic cellars.

Château Brancion - A well-preserved medieval castle with breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, providing a glimpse into Burgundy's feudal past.

Château La Ferté - A charming 17th-century château with elegant French architecture and extensive formal gardens.

Château Germolles - The best-preserved residence of the Dukes of Burgundy, transformed in the 14th century into a luxurious country home by Margaret of Flanders.

One of the most beautiful Villages in France

Chateau-Chalon is a village to the north of Lons-le-Saunier in the Jura department of Franche-Comte and is about 35 km from us. It is classified as one of the 'most beautiful villages' of France and is in a very picturesque location at the heart of the Jura wine-growing region.

The Chateau-Chalon vineyards date back to their introduction by the Romans, and the local, golden-yellow wine is held in very high regard. You will have plenty of opportunities to sample and buy the local product in and around the village.

Chateau-Chalon is quite a small village but the charming unspoiled streets, the castle and the lovely views ensure it is an unmissable destination when you explore the Jura.
